Question: Can anyone tell me the weight of a railroad track.? Posted: 30 Oct 2014 12:31 PM PDT "Rail is graded by weight over a standard length. Heavier rail can support greater axle loads and higher train speeds without sustaining damage than lighter rail, but at a greater cost. In North America and the UK, rail is graded in pounds per yard (usually shown as pound or lb), so 130-pound rail would weigh 130 lb/yd (64.5 kg/m). The usual range is 115 to 141 lb/yd (57.0 to 69.9 kg/m)" "North American railroads until the mid- to late-20th century used rails 39 ft (11.89 m) long so they could be carried to and from a worksite in gondola cars (open wagons), often 40 ft (12.2 m) long; as gondola sizes increased, so did rail lengths" So 130 lb a yard at 40 feet times 2 rails = 3466.6 lbs for 40 ft of track. Not counting the ties and ballast. |
Question: Imagine a train that has constant axle spacing and infinite length? Posted: 29 Oct 2014 11:31 PM PDT Imagine a train that has constant axle spacing and infinite length? Imagine a train that has constant axle spacing and infinite length, sketch the time history of the displacement at a fixed point in the rail when the train is moving at constant velocity?. Sketch the time history when the velocity doubles. What is the type of these functions? |
Question: Why would their be NJ Transit cars on a Norfolk Southern freight train? Posted: 29 Oct 2014 01:30 PM PDT Why would their be NJ Transit cars on a Norfolk Southern freight train? This morning, I was in Phillipsburgh, NJ watching trains go by, when at about 6:05 am, a mixed freight train passes me going west towards Allentown, PA. At the end of the train were several NJ Transit cars all with lights off and doors open. Why would NJ Transit cars be going to PA? |
