Question: How to calculate noise from aircraft or airport? Posted: 14 Nov 2015 09:59 AM PST But you must use numbers to get a representative noise level. Sound is measured in decibels, which is a logarithmic function. You don't have to know the math to get decibels, the measuring equipment will do that for you. But you will have to at least understand what the decibels mean. It is impossible to tell you what a sound level meter would tell you for a building 2 km away from an airport, because we do not know the exact airport, how many planes, what type of planes, etc. And what objects or terrain lies between the airport and your building? What is the predominant wind direction relative to the airport and the building? You must use a sound level meter, and a person trained to use and interpret it, to come up with an answer. |
