Posted: 10 Nov 2015 07:38 PM PST You have an old truck and the alternator is probably dead. The life of the alternator depends on several factors. Get a DMM and check the alternator. A DMM is cheap and they work well for what they're worth. They are very useful for a person into electronics and car audio. If it's dead, you need to replace the alternator. ![]() |

Question: Will a subwoofer at 300w rms sound good (no damage as well) on a 500w rms amp? Posted: 10 Nov 2015 02:49 PM PST I don't know how much detail you need to be convinced that it's ok, but I will try. Quality speakers such as Pioneer are tested and rated for power using sine waves and/or different types of "noise" to generate a known amount of power through the sub's voice coil. This scenario presents CONTINUOUS power to the subwoofer. So in the case of the 300w sub one can assume it can withstand (at least) 300w of continuous power w/o failure. (Cheap speakers do not undergo tests like these. As a result, the ratings they get are often ridiculously inaccurate). Amplifiers use a similar testing/rating method. An amp that is accurately rated for 500w rms can produce 500w continuously while playing a sine wave. In the real world -- MUSIC is NOT a sine wave or other continuous "noise" signal. It is a collection of dynamic signals ranging from high power to very low power. It is this variance in power that allows an amplifier that's too powerful on paper to be perfectly reasonable to drive a speaker rated for lower power. It is roughly approximated that on average a music signal contains 1/4-1/3 the power of a sine wave of the same peak voltage. In other words -- playing a 500w rms amp at full volume (unclipped) will deliver no more than around 200w rms to the load. IF the amp is incorrectly adjusted -- too much gain and too much (or any) bass boost -- this can and likely WILL cause the amp to clip at higher volume. Clipping causes the amp to generate excess power that was not part of the original signal (and sounds terrible) that over time (not much time in severe cases) can cause damage to the speaker. ![]() |
