Question: Whats the schedule like for a CG SAR helicopter pilot? Also do you love your job? Posted: 10 Nov 2015 07:15 PM PST I knew some USAF SAR pilots, engineers and gunners. You think they just fly? There are lots of additional duties that are done by pilots, especially in small squadrons, like Tech manual updates, training, planning & scheduling, weather, etc. They don't just put the flight suits on, go out and fly, then go home. Question: Experimental aircraft with both propeller and jet engines on same airplane? Posted: 10 Nov 2015 12:32 PM PST Did you know that the US Navy's first jet also had a piston engine and a prop? There was a squadron equipped with Ryan FR Fireball at the end of WWII, but they did not see combat before the end of the war. And by the way, a couple of the other responses are a bit off the mark. The secondary jet engines on the B-36 and C-123 were NOT there primarily to help with takeoff. They were there to help with high altitude performance. The early turbojets had notoriously poor take off performance, leaving off the weight of the engines and the separate fuel system would have helped takeoff more than adding them, at least at sea level. Early B-36's had no problem taking off with only the 6 piston engines. It's not that B-36 was not a successful design, it just was superseded rapidly by pure jets like the B-47 and B-52 |
