Question: Why won't my amplifier turn on? Posted: 17 Nov 2015 12:47 PM PST Amplifier power problems are easy to figure out, if you have a digital multimeter. If you don't have one, buy or borrow one. The cheapest model you can find will be perfectly adequate. Set the meter for DC volts. If it's not auto-ranging, set the voltage range for 20v. With the audio system turned on, place the black probe on the amplifier's ground terminal. Use the red probe to test the voltage on the main power terminal, then the remote terminal. Both voltage readings should be around 11 volts or higher. If the main power voltage is low, check your connection at the battery and at the fuse holder near the battery. Check for a blown fuse. If you have an AGU (glass tube) fuse, replace it, even if it doesn't look blown. If the remote voltage is low, check the remote wire connection at the head unit. Make sure it's connected to the correct output, and that it's not pinched or shorted anywhere along its length. If both voltage readings are low, check your amplifier's ground connection. If both voltage readings are okay, but the amplifier isn't turning on, check the fuses built into the amp. If they're good, the amp itself is defective. |
