Question: Every helicopter can be flown by a single pilot? Posted: 21 Nov 2015 09:18 PM PST I mean the largest fixed wing civilian plane that can be flown by a single pilot is the PC-12 but I cant find and info about the largest single pilot certified helicopter. Is it because every helicopter is single pilot certified and can be flown by one pilot as long as he has a license or a rating? Can large helicopters like the Agusta Westland EH-101 (AW101) and Erikson Skycrane be legally flown by only one pilot? |

Posted: 21 Nov 2015 11:58 AM PST The F-16 Fighting Falcon entered service powered by the Pratt & Whitney F100 afterburning turbofan. Seeking a way to drive unit costs down, the USAF implemented the Alternative Fighter Engine (AFE) program in 1984, under which the engine contract would be awarded through competition. The F110 currently powers 86% of the USAF F-16C/Ds (June 2005). The F110-GE-100 provides around 4,000 lbf (17.8 kN) more thrust than the F100-PW-200 and requires more air, which led to the increase in the area of the engine intake. The F-16C/D Block 30/32s were the first to be built with a common engine bay, able to accept both engines, with block 30s having the bigger intake (known as "Big Mouth") and block 32s retaining the standard intake. Initial orders were for the F110-GE-100 rated at 28,000 lbf (125 kN). Later versions of the F110 include the F110-GE-129 delivering 29,400 lbf (131 kN) thrust and the F110-GE-132 delivering 32,000 lbf (142 kN) The United Arab Emirates' Block 60 is powered by the General Electric F110-GE-132 turbofan, which is rated at a maximum thrust of 32,500 lbf (144.6 kN), the highest ever developed for the F-16 aircraft.[4][5] |
Posted: 21 Nov 2015 09:37 AM PST If you travel with an airline, the best time to ask to see the cockpit is asking a flight attendant to ask the captain if he could approve a cockpit visit AFTER ARRIVAL at destination. Pilots are often busy before departure, and visits are prohibited during flight. Besides that, gate agents (while boarding) will lecture you about the airline's policies about cockpit visits, and regulations, so better wait until you are in the airplane and ask during flight. The best way, for a visit, be the last to exit the airplane cabin. I am an airline captain, and we occasionally get such requests from passengers, and this is often approved by the captain without problems. We understand the interest of the travelling public about airplanes, and yes, we can answer a few of your questions. By the way, there are a few airline pilots (besides myself) who contribute to Y!A who can also answer questions you might have about airplanes. |
