Question: Motorcycle safety tips? Posted: 26 Nov 2015 10:32 PM PST Helmet, jacket, gloves, all made especially for motorcycles. Don't leave out the gloves! When you fall you instinctively put out your hands to stop yourself. Staying away from cars is good advice. People in cars are the biggest hazard! Don't assume they see you, don't assume what they will do at an intersection or whatever. Most important, I think, is just to ride like a grownup. I see young guys on bike doing stunts, riding way too fast for conditions, etc. When you're 20 you feel immortal! People talk about a bike being 'too powerful' for a beginner. But if you ride like a grownup you use only the power you need. When you're starting out weight and size are more important than power, that is, a smaller, lighter bike is safer because it's easier to manage. Power can certainly get you into trouble, but if you try hard enough you can get into the same trouble on a moped! I would seriously recommend the MSF course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation). They supply the bike. They don't teach you to ride--you learn that yourself by riding, and I think that's the only way. What they teach you is some very important safety habits to keep you relatively safe while you learn. Other than that it's just 'common sense'--go a little slower than you think you can because that gives you just a fraction of a second longer to make a decision (and that can make a huge difference!) Don't try to see how far you can lean the bike over. Learn to be aware of what's going on all around you. |
