Posted: 17 Nov 2015 03:20 AM PST No, you may not operate an unregistered vehicle on public roads. Your options are: 1. Get a temp tag if possible. Not all states offer this option. 2. Have it towed by a licensed wrecker service. 3. Tow it yourself on a flat bed trailer with all 4 wheels off of the ground. |
Question: Had new car for a week and totaled it without insurance what should i do? Posted: 17 Nov 2015 01:18 AM PST No one will replace it for you. No one will cover the damages for you. One can only hope that you simply hit a tree, ran into a guardrail, culvert or something like that, where only your car was damaged, and you paid cash for it. If you paid cash for it, you're in better shape than if you financed it. However, if you financed it, you are still responsible for the loan repayment - you borrowed the money. You were supposed to get full insurance, including collision, which would have paid for the wholesale value of the car. If you had bought GAP insurance, it would have paid the difference between that wholesale value and the amount owed. If you had car replacement coverage, (like the Liberty Mutual and Allstate advertisements suggest), the car would have been replaced, but you'd still keep paying the loan. By the way, most of those car replacement policies only exist for 1 year, after that, they are regular GAP coverage) and they are much more expensive than regular GAP coverage AND they ONLY COVER BRAND NEW CURRENT MODEL VEHICLES, used car purchases do not apply. https://www.ameriprise.com/auto-home-ins... Next problem - if you caused the accident, you are personally liable for the damages, and injuries, medical bills of any driver or passenger. Finally, if the police were called, to make a report, you will face traffic court, with citations for driving without insurance, fines which could be $1500 or more, ban, revocation / suspension of driver's license for 6 months, to a year. Additional civil or criminal proceedings might arise if someone was seriously hurt or died in the accident. Your insurance would protect you from these things, to some degree, if you had bought it like you were supposed to do. Hopefully, you walk away and start over, having learned the lessons why financial responsibility, regarding insurance is important. |
