Question: How is the output of a turbocharger controlled (airplane)? Posted: 13 Nov 2015 08:27 PM PST Essentially the output of the turbocharger is simply controlled by the mass flow of gas from the exhaust, there is no specific control of the turbocharger itself. However, the throttle is used to set the required manifold pressure and the wastegate dumps anything above that pressure overboard. In most turbocharged light aircraft the manifold pressure does not go much above atmospheric at ground level, say 25 inches or so, the turbocharger simply maintains sea level power to higher altitudes. At sea level the wastegate basically dumps the entire output, but as the aircraft climbs it slowly closes to maintain the set MP |
Question: Why is there so much jet traffic over Anchorage, AK? Posted: 13 Nov 2015 08:16 PM PST Flights LA to most of Asia would pass South of Anchorage, but one I can see that flew over a couple of hours back is a United 777 flying Denver to Tokyo. Another in the air now is Chicago to Tokyo, but they passes well Nth of Anchorage. Either way, it's on a fairly busy flight path. This is another site that lets you track commercial aircraft in flight. You can look up what's overhead in real time. |
