Posted: 03 Oct 2014 05:59 AM PDT This is a wonderful opportunity to confront your fears and deal with riding a public bus. It would be helpful if you could take a trip on a Saturday with someone who is familiar with the route. But if you must do it on your own go to your transit authority website. They will have a map or even a trip finder. Print out the instructions. When you get on the first bus ask the driver to please call out the stop where you transfer to the second bus. Then just get off and wait for the second bus. Every single day in the US millions of people ride buses with no problem. I am one of them. And you can do the same thing. And if you ride buses you can get around cheaply in many cities when you cannot afford a car. Knowing how to ride a bus is a liberating experience. It will add to you education. |
Question: Poll: If there wasnt a speed limit on the highway, how fast would you usually drive? Posted: 02 Oct 2014 05:21 PM PDT The only place on earth that I know of the has the roads designed and the people properly trained for high road speeds is Germany. Even so speeding is very costly in terms of fuel and tires. From 55 MPH to 70 MPH the wind resistance forces on a car double. In a recent test of a new VW TDI Diesel vehicle by a car magazine, the vehicle delivered 60 MPG at 55 MPH. At 70 MPH it dropped to 50 MPG. Since I just completed last weekend a 365 mile trip and observed a few people, very few people driving at or below the posted speed limit on two states, I have to say that most people would drive 80 plus MPH since they do not care about fuel. Since "time" is relative a 100 mile drive at 80 MPH seems "reasonable" to, well, anyone on any vehicle including pickup trucks with boat trailers that must average about 8 to 10 MPG. At 10 MPG a vehicle uses 6 gallons per hour of driving, 80 miles. That is close to $20 per hour. I was driving at 62 MPH and my car indicated 33.5 MPG or less than 2 gallons per hour. M entire 360 mile trip was just over $35 in fuel. If I had elected to imitate the speeds I observed, my calculator indicates a fuel cost just past $105. Since a speeding vehicle requires most stops for refueling, any "time advantage" is cancelled to the point of being foolish. But most people do not put pen and pencil calculations as to fuel and other costs. The photo of a deadly Ford Mustang GT is part of the "other costs." For more photos like this one got to 'wreckedexotics.com" and perhaps this can answer your question. Oh, in the famous car show from the UK, Top Gear, in one episode, Mr. Jeremy Clark was traveling to Brussels from London in a Mercedes-Benz super car. In some section of a super highway he could have driven at over 150 MPH but he indicated that at those speeds the car would use all of the fuel in less than 30 minutes, if I recall correctly. Cars can go fast but relatively for not much time or distance. |
