Question: 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5, 4-Cylinder Losing Oil Somewhere?

Posted: 30 Aug 2014 02:52 PM PDT

After an oil change, I drive less than 300 miles, and my car ends up low on oil (barely registers on the stick) and the oil looks dirty.

I've had the valve cover and the gasket replaced, but it's still losing oil. It's not a smoke machine and I don't see any puddles after it's been sitting, but a friend of mine noticed black smoke when I took off once. He said it was the only time he saw it. I noticed it after it rained, and I started it up. There was a brief puff of black smoke that quickly dissipated.

It has about 104000 miles on it now, and oil changes were done at recommended intervals up until it started losing oil. Now, I have it changed roughly every 2-3 weeks.

It'll be a couple of days before Nissan can look at it, and I'm getting ready to take it to PepBoys now. They say they'll do a dye test.
