Question: Are butterfly knives and throwing knives same? Posted: 28 Aug 2014 04:25 AM PDT A butterfly knife is an asian folding knife, like a pocket knife is what we'd call it. A throwing knife is any kind of knife that is aerodynamic. Some butterfly knives are throwing knives, some aren't. |

Question: What do you think is an outstanding feat of flying? Posted: 27 Aug 2014 11:36 PM PDT To me, the greatest feat of flying I know of involves not the pilots, but a very brave woman, Sarah Jane Harrison, who was a Flight Attendant on a BOAC Boeing 707 in 1968, which made an emergency landing at Heathrow, after an engine fell off the wing and the aircraft caught fire. Having successfully evacuated all passengers but one, she returned into the aircraft to rescue the disabled passenger and finding her trapped, would not leave and died trying to save the passenger. That's what it is all about! She became the only woman in peacetime to be awarded a George Cross, Britains highest civilian award for bravery. It was never more deserved. Jane Harrison has always been, to me, the gold standard that an airline crew should aspire to. |
Question: How does one go about getting their helicopter pilots license? Posted: 27 Aug 2014 06:56 PM PDT In the USA, you either go to a flight school that gives helicopter training and spend a lot of money OR you join the Army, apply to the Warrant Officer program to fly helicopters, hope you get accepted and then spend 10 years on active duty. If you're not accepted for flight training you're still committed to the Army for 4 years |
Question: How much can I get a used small plane for? And how long and how much is it for a license.? Posted: 27 Aug 2014 05:16 PM PDT You can usually buy a good useful airplane from about $30K upwards, Cessna 172s or Piper Cherokees are about as much airplane as anyone really needs for weekend flying, look for something well maintained from about 1970, there is nothing wrong with a well maintained 40 year old aircraft. A licence will cost you around $8-$10,000 and, if you fly once a week will take you about a year to get. I am not sure if the increased insurance cost of learning in your own airplane gives you a saving over learning in someone elses, I suspect it may not |
