Question: AMTRAK MAPLE LEAF TRAIN QUESTION!!!!? Posted: 19 Aug 2014 12:56 PM PDT Hi, I'll be riding on the Maple Leaf train with coach seats. My question is that of there are power outlets on the train and WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED!? My laptop dies without being plugged in and I have a 12 hour train ride waiting for me! Does anyone know where the power outlets would be located in the maple leaf? Thanks! |
Question: Why can't trains brake? Posted: 19 Aug 2014 12:26 PM PDT The reason why trains are the most energy-efficient means of land transport is because they have smooth steel wheels running on smooth steel rails. The contact area of each wheel is less than that of a dime. This makes for very low friction between the two, and low rolling resistance. The down-side is that - because of this - trains take some distance to stop, and they cannot be steered clear of any obstruction. If the brakes are fully applied the wheels lock and slide, and any engineer will tell you this gives less retardation than when the wheels are still turning and just under the point of skidding. This is why - in most civilised countries at least - the tracks are securely fenced, and sophisticated signalling systems are used to ensure that the train drivers have adequate warning of the state of the track ahead as regards other trains, speed restrictions and so on. Any obstruction on the track has no right to be there. As I have related here several times, I had a suicide who jumped in front of my train less than 100 feet in front of me when I was doing 75 mph. Even with a modern electric train with state-of-the-art brakes with the railway equivalent of ABS, it took nearly half a mile to stop, by which time the guy was pulp. |
Question: Why is my train loosing speed in train simulator 2014? Posted: 19 Aug 2014 04:49 AM PDT I would hazard a guess that with the reverser set at 100% cut-off - which is far more than real locomotives are capable of - you are using too much steam and reducing the boiler pressure, resulting in less tractive effort, and therefore a reduction in speed until the pressure recovers. Question: What train do I take to get from new haven ct to West Point? Posted: 18 Aug 2014 06:47 PM PDT You could take Metro North to GCT, the GCT to Peekskill on the Hudson Line , then a 30 min taxi ride to West Point. The trains is on the wrong side of the Hudson to get you there without a bridge and a taxi. |
Question: When was the last time a train either passenger or goods train ever got hijacked? Posted: 18 Aug 2014 05:38 PM PDT There have been numerous case around the world of goods trains being forced to stop and their contents being stolen, but there are usually regarded as robberies rather than hijackings. In South Wales coal thieves would sometimes damage signals on colliery branch lines to do this. The train driver would stop at the faulty signal and some men or boys would climb onto the wagons at the back of the train and throw some coal off, usually without the driver noticing. They would then run off and come back later to collect the spilled coal from beside the track. |
