Question: Trainhopping with permission? Posted: 11 Sep 2014 06:54 PM PDT Try saying you want to make a documentary on train hopping. They will still probably say no. but you can ask. It is not like it used to be. http://blue.utb.edu/labad/skeletons_in_r... It is a Federal crime. also a basic trespassing thing. Non railroad employees are not wanted on the rail property. Maybe you have heard about security and train bombings in other countries. CSX has no desire to see what happens here.from letting people wander around at will on the trains. n order of preference, you want to ride in open boxcars, on the rear platform of a grainer or hopper, between the wheels of piggybacked trailers, in the well behind cargo containers (if there is a solid floor), on the second or third deck of empty auto carriers (if you can get in), or in empty gondolas. And when you get really bold, you can ride on the back engine of several coupled units at night. Don't ride tank cars that carry all sorts of nasty ****, loaded flatcars and gondolas whose shifting load may crush you, or cars marked Bad Order that are broken but have not yet been removed from service. Your safety should be your most important consideration, so don't take short cuts to save time. Ever. If you make a good documentary you might get CSX to let you ride up front with the engineer. It is a lot warmer and the view much nicer. |
Question: What's the point of there being passenger trains in the US? Posted: 11 Sep 2014 02:52 PM PDT In the northeast corridor Amtrak does make a profit and northeast corridor trains carry 85 per cent of all Amtrak passengers. The rest of the network is based on a contract between Congress and the American People that if private railroads were allowed to discontinue passenger service the Federal Government would maintain it for the public good. Amtrak serves many places where their are neither airlines nor buses because the private sector cannont make a profit at those locations. Yet people do live there and for some of them transportation is essential. Amtrak also provides service for people with disabilities who find air lines or buses difficult or impossible to use. Buses do not have handicapped restrooms; Amtrak does. And while planes have handicapped restrooms many require passengers to clime up, down or up and down a flight of stairs to board or exist the train. |
Question: How can I get to newyork from owings mills? Posted: 11 Sep 2014 10:56 AM PDT From Owings Mills take the subway or a bus to Baltimore Penn Station. Take an Amtrak train to New York Penn Station. When hyou get to New York go down stairs and you will find the Long Island Railroad Station. Take a train or Hempstead or Mineola. Hofstra has a shuttle bus that serves both stations. Amtrak is the key and the earlier you buy your ticket the cheaper it will be. If you want to really travel cheaply go to Perryville or Wilmington and take a SEPTA train to 30th Street, Philadelphia. Change to a Trenton train. At Trenton change to a New Jersey Transit train. It will take you to New Your Penn Station. It will take you more time to do that and I suggest Amtrak from Baltimore. The Northeast Regional service, Amtrak's cheapest, is comfortable and that is what I would take. The Long Island Railroad runs commuter service and trains are fairly frequent. You may have to wait an hour for your train but it should not take longer than that. If you go the LIRR website you can find a schedule. And the fares are cheaper than Amtrak. If you go to the Hofstra website you can find a schedule for their shuttle bus. If you have not done this it may sound kind of daunting. But it is very doable. So do it, have a good trip and enjoy your visit. |
