The founder runs a used bike business around here so maybe he does have a decent record of prices, although the prices I spot checked seem on the high side to me.

Question: 1998 toyota vs 2001 honda?

Go for the civic. It's smaller, it's not too hard or expensive to repair. It's newer, and better on gas. You can't go wrong with Toyota or Honda. But I think you'll like the civic more. The Avalon is on the base of a luxury car, which means more money. Do what you like, but the civic is the winner.

My cousin has a 2001. It's been hit, poorly taken care of, 200,xxx miles and it's STILL his everyday driver.

Good luck.

Question: What kind of make/model car restorations produce the most turnaround?

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 05:48 PM PDT

You need a ton of money to do that and you need to have the skills, cars are not really good for investment. I don't think it takes $4000 to restore a Camaro. For starters, I've seen unfinished project VW bugs in my area for $3,000 and restored ones go for $10,000. Not sure how much the parts are but they're dirt cheap and it's one of the easiest cars to restore.

The car with the most turnaround in my opinion is a Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing. I've seen people buy a junker for $400,000, put $200,000 towards parts and restoring it, and selling it for $1,500,000. But $400,000 is the minimum for a junker one.
