Question: Can A rogue wave sink and aircraft carrier? Posted: 12 Aug 2014 09:36 PM PDT A rogue wave of that size could roll over and wreck pretty much anything , but what you have to remember is that in deep ocean waters a wave of that height will be unlikely to be steep or breaking , so ships simply pass over them , and do so actually with less strain than passing through a series of 50 foot swells , because in those the big ships would be subjected to Hogging and Sagging stresses ( first the ends of the ship are supported while the middle dangles in middair , then the middle is supported while the ends are not , repeatedly ) |
Posted: 12 Aug 2014 09:21 PM PDT Having looked at the big Wikipedia article , I'd guess a schooner , as it says in there that the largest vessel in his fleet at the time he had the Pride was a small armed brig . Later on he got a new Schooner which was an improvement , but as that new ship was only forty tons , The Pride must have been quite small . |
